Armed man fleeing police in stolen SUV shot dead by officers, sheriff says

A driver fleeing Fulton County sheriff's deputies was shot and killed during a foot chase through an Atlanta neighborhood around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat identified the driver as 20-year-old Travon Yarborough.

It was not immediately clear how Yarborough came to the attention of the FCSO's Fugitive Apprehension Support Team, but Sheriff Labat said the SUV was identified as having been stolen out of Decatur.

He said the driver tried to flee deputies and ended up crashing into a utility pole near the corner of Harwell Road and Delmar Lane, just east of Interstate 285.

“Our investigators attempted a traffic stop and at that point he jumped out, apparently crushed behind us,” the sheriff said.

The sheriff said Yarborough then began running toward nearby homes. Officers chased after him and eventually fired shots, when Sheriff Labat said Yarborough pulled out a gun.

“He brandished a weapon and was shot by one of our investigators,” the sheriff said at a news conference shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday.

It's not yet clear whether Yarborough fired shots or pointed the gun at officers, but the sheriff said he was shot at least once, sending him to a nearby hospital for treatment. He is expected to recover.

A young woman in the SUV was also taken to hospital for observation.

No MPs were injured in the shooting.

Yarborough is expected to be charged with multiple crimes, but an exact list of charges was not immediately available.

An Atlanta Police Department canine unit was mobilized to assist in the search for evidence. The sheriff said a weapon was recovered and turned over to the GBI, as was the investigation.

This is the second shooting involving the Fulton County Sheriff's Office this year and the 42nd such investigation launched by the GBI this year.

What is the Fulton County Sheriff's Fugitive Apprehension Support Team?

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office launched the Fugitive Apprehension Support Team, or FAST, in March 2023. It is the successor to the county's SCORPION unit, whose nickname was tarnished by the killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, the sheriff said at the time.

Since its inception, the team has targeted and captured some of the region's most elusive criminals. More than 500 fugitives, including individuals wanted for violent crimes such as murder, armed robbery and sexual assault, have been arrested.

“Our goal with our FAST team is really to help APD, to help our surrounding agencies really focus on fighting crime, and in this particular case, again, the car came back stolen, the gentlemen had a gun and one more bad guy on the street,” the sheriff said.

The sheriff added that the team's goal is to fight crime, apprehend violent criminals and reduce gang-related crime.
