Chatham County Sheriff's Office investigates drowning in Jordan Lake

Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff's Office is investigating a drowning that occurred Saturday evening at the Jordan Lake Wildlife Area. At approximately 11:43 p.m. on June 15, 2024, emergency responders were dispatched to 6771 NC 751 for reports of a possible drowning.

The victim was identified as Pradip Kumar Bhujel, 25, of Charlotte.

Mr. Bhujel was at Jordan Lake with friends for a fishing trip. According to eyewitnesses, he waded into the water and then disappeared from sight. His friends raised the alarm, prompting a response from the Chatham County Sheriff's Office and first responders, including Chatham County Emergency Management, the North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, FirstHealth EMS and the Office of the forensic doctor.

Upon arrival, search efforts focused on the area where Mr. Bhujel was last seen. His body was found and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chatham County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Medical Examiner, is investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Pradip Kumar Bhujel,” Sheriff Mike Roberson said. “Our team is thoroughly investigating the incident to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.”

Last month, Bryan Guzman, 16, of Winston-Salem, drowned at a birthday party at Jordan Lake.
