Fatal 2023 Portland police shooting ruled justified

The fatal shooting of a 42-year-old man by Portland police in December 2023 was ruled a justified shooting by the Maine Attorney General's Office.

Police were searching for Kyle Desmarais, 42, late on the night of Dec. 17 after receiving a report of a serious assault in which he allegedly brandished a handgun. Officers Jacob Webster and Jordin Jackson arrested Desmarais when they spotted his vehicle heading south on I-295 and attempted to contact him.

Desmarais allegedly got out of his vehicle and pointed a gun at Webster and Jackson, before gunfire was exchanged.
