“So it’s August 16th. I wake up in the morning, I'm in Sydney, Australia, in a hotel room, and we're on tour in Australia. I probably woke up around 8am or something – Australian time – and got a text from my wife that said, “I'm so sorry, I tried really hard not to have any baby while you're gone. And my god, man, it sucked.

Combs got emotional, adding, “It sucked because he was born on August 15 in the United States. i have to see “He was born, which was awesome,” presumably implying he watched via video call. “He wasn't born yet, but my wife went, she texted me on the way to the hospital, and he was two and a half weeks early and I was supposed to be home and I wasn't. It was really hard to do and I didn't really tell anyone.

He added that two of his close friends also work as guitar techs and personal assistants, so he had a support system. “God, it was a tough day, but I was so lucky that many of my closest friends now work for me. And so I had a really good support system. “I was able to be with them through all of this.”

Even though Combs couldn't be there in person, he said his wife also had “a really good support system” by his side back home in the United States.

“Luckily, my mother-in-law came to spend a month while I was away, because obviously we have a 1-year-old child. [Tex turned 2 on June 19] and my wife is basically nine months pregnant at that point, so thank goodness she was there. My sister-in-law also lives in Nashville. So my wife had a really good support system for this experience, which I'm very grateful for. It made things a lot easier. I had people with me, everything went well. No problems in the process or anything.

He called the day “a defining moment in my life, for sure” and said the day highlighted some of the less-than-rosy aspects of the music industry. “Leaving, and your schedule is crazy and you're traveling everywhere. It's not like I can drop everything I'm doing and go home for 18 hours.

While his new album Fathers and sons includes songs dealing with fatherhood from different angles, he said: “I haven't touched on that topic too much in this album because it's really hard for me to deal with. »
