Mamaroneck boy and his mother struck and killed by school bus in Westchester County identified

MAMARONECK, Westchester (WABC) — A kindergartner and his mother were identified Friday after they were both struck by a school bus while walking to school Thursday morning.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. in front of the Mamaroneck Avenue School on Mamaroneck Avenue near New Street. People continue to leave flowers and toys near the crosswalk on Friday.

Michael Donovan, 6, was pronounced dead at the scene and his mother, Molly Murphy Donovan, 43, was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses described the mother yelling for the bus to stop.

“The saddest part was seeing his lunch box and his school bag open and all his pencils out, and the kid just wanted to have a day at school,” witness Nick Zamora said. “And it was his last day.”

Police said their initial investigation revealed the school bus was traveling eastbound from New Street and turning left onto Mamaroneck Avenue with the green light.

As the bus turned, several parents and children crossed the street at the crosswalk with the walk sign.

The driver, a 68-year-old man, is cooperative and police believe it was a tragic accident. At this time, no charges are pending.

It's still unclear why the bus driver didn't yield the right of way to pedestrians, but parents say they've been asking for a crossing guard for years.

“There’s no excuse,” added Mamaroneck resident Lori Lyons. “There is no excuse why the village of Mamaroneck hasn't had someone here in years for this to happen. This should never have happened today.”

The bus was headed to Mamaroneck Avenue School at the time of the crash. Several students and an aide were on board, but no other injuries were reported.

Mental health professionals are assisting parents and children at the school on Friday and a police officer is on hand to closely monitor the intersection.

The community started a petition on calling for a crossing guard, better visibility of crosswalks and reduced speed limits.

Police, along with Mamaroneck village officials, said they are partnering with Westchester County to study ways to improve pedestrian and traffic safety at the intersection.

Loved ones say Molly's birthday was this Sunday.
