Man arrested for stabbing passerby during reported robbery in Encinitas – San Diego Union-Tribune

A 25-year-old man was arrested Saturday after allegedly stabbing someone who tried to stop him from stealing from a Home Depot in Encinitas.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Giovani Pantoja said the man was trying to leave with items he had stolen when three passersby intervened around 10 a.m. at the store on north El Camino Real.

When confronted, the man pulled out a knife, stabbed one of the bystanders in the leg and fled, Pantoja said in a news release.

Responding officers applied a tourniquet to the injured person's leg and he was taken to a hospital, Pantoja said. But they were unable to find the alleged attacker.

Officers returned to the Home Depot to search for more evidence and were informed that a man matching the suspect's description was in the area, officials said. He was then arrested on Anillo Way, east of El Camino Real in Carlsbad.

The man suffered unspecified injuries as officers attempted to arrest him, and he was later booked into Vista Jail on suspicion of charges including assault with a deadly weapon and petit larceny shortly before 4 p.m. , according to detention records.
