The Santa Barbara Fire Department responded Wednesday afternoon to a gas leak in the 1400 block of Cliff Drive, prompting the evacuation of a church and a daycare in the area.

Parents were notified that a shelter was in place at Cliff Drive Care Center around 2:30 p.m., with children being cared for in the preschool and infants in the upstairs sanctuary, according to a source at the care center. Adjacent properties at the corner of Cliff Drive and Santa Cruz Boulevard were then evacuated, including the Cliff Drive Care Center and the Free Methodist Church, according to the SB City Fire Department.

Workers from the Southern California Gas Company arrived at the scene to try to contain the leaks, city fire officials said. Tests were conducted to check ambient gas levels in the area to determine if it was safe for people to remain outside, witnesses said.

Around 3:20 p.m., city firefighters and SoCal Gas evacuated nearby properties to resume business as usual.
