Weight of cocaine and heroin trafficking seized in Springfield, 4 people arrested

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Four people were arrested Wednesday after heroin, marijuana and cocaine were found.

According to Springfield Police spokesman Ryan Walsh, officers were investigating a 54-year-old man. Jorge Ortiz-Vázquez of Springfield near Harrison Avenue when they allegedly witnessed a drug transaction inside a car. The other suspect, 43 years old Rafael López-Santiago from Springfield, left on a motorcycle. Lopez-Santiago was then stopped on Main Street and arrested for possession of cocaine.


Detectives continued to monitor the suspect vehicle, which traveled toward Main Street where police allegedly witnessed another drug transaction conducted by a 56-year-old man. Jose Ortiz of Springfield. Officers arrested Ortiz near the intersection of Main Street and Loring Street after seizing crack cocaine and ten bags of heroin from him.

Officers then conducted a traffic stop on Ortiz-Vazquez's vehicle near the intersection of William and Dale streets. Ortiz-Vazquez tried to flee but was quickly arrested by police. Police seized approximately 53 grams of cocaine and 250 bags of heroin from Ortiz-Vazquez's home, as well as prepackaged marijuana and approximately 140 bags of heroin and crack cocaine from his vehicle. The passenger, 31 years old Odalys Pesquera of Indian Orchard, was also arrested.

A total of $711 in cash was seized, along with approximately 400 bags of heroin and crack cocaine as well as more than 53 grams of cocaine. All four are accused of the following:

Ortiz-Vázquez:

  • Cocaine trafficking, 18-36 grams
  • Distribution of a class A drug
  • Distribution of a Class B drug (two counts)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class A drug
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class D drug

Fishing :

  • Cocaine trafficking, 18-36 grams
  • Distribution of a class A drug
  • Distribution of a class B drug
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class A drug
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class D drug

Ortiz:

  • Possession of a class B drug
  • Possession of a class A drug

López-Santiago:

  • Possession of a class B drug
